In the News
In recent years, controversy has followed the national carrier with accusations of anti-competitive practices and racism surfacing. In June of 2007, SAA was fined millions of rands for price fixing. Travel agents were also paid off to ensure that South African Airways was always recommended as the preferred carrier. Many other local airlines like Flitestar, SunAir and Nationwide had to close their doors as they just could not survive the price war with a government funded airline.
More recently, racism accusations reared its ugly head when South African Airways started turning down white cadet pilots based on race. It was believed that the online application form was rigged to ensure that white applicants are excluded automatically. SAA has since responded saying that their “normal recruitment process allows for the employment of white male pilots as and when vacancies exist; particularly when no candidate is available from a previously disadvantaged background.”
